The natural history and prognosis of most fetal tumors is well known. Ultrasound has made it possible to detect them early and to perform an accurate follow-up. It has also provided means for invasive testing in such cases i.e. biopsies. Early detection of a fetal tumor allows for early termination of pregnancy if necessary, and also allows the preparations conducted by a multidisciplinary team for a safe delivery.

We have to act with caution in this new field, because experience has proved that prenataly and postnataly detected tumors may behave in different ways and thus demand different management approaches. However, with the earlier detection of these tumors and growing experience with their perinatal management, it is hoped that the long-term prognosis of affected infants can be significantly improved.
